Today I’ve the opportunity to delve myself in the universe of the Swedish band Verdun, who’s under the wings of the renowned underground label Depressive Illusions Records (managed by the musician behind Moloch’s moniker). This Scandinavian act eventually offers, despite his deference to the masterpiece of the subgenre, and after a plethora of carbon-copy albums labeling themselves as “post-something”, an interesting mixture between long, dreaming atmospheric parts and the traditional aggressive tremolo-picking scores, which let the platter be brisker and, at the end, enjoyable. If I had to draw a comparison, Wigrid would be the first name that comes to my mind, referring particularly to the vocal styles (rare clean vocals interwoven with high-pitched insane shrieks) and the riffing, which is extremely repetitive, animated only by melancholic acoustic minor chords.
Well, for the die-hard supporters of the “depressive propaganda” the young ensemble can’t represent a revolution, but, at least, it’s able to deliver strong feelings,-for example the main arpeggio of Ingenmansland’s freezing but still, strikingly, heartfelt- and a deep sense of drowning in an ocean of murky negativity. Exactly the emotions a release like this should give.
If the truth must be told, Verdun is far from being free of the influence, of, like I said, bands such as Silencer, early Shining, or German Wedard, for instance, but this seems to be an inner-force rather than a true limit. Only who is able to learn from the past, paraphrasing the great American poet T.S. Elliot, can find, at the end, his voice. And after all, the last impression Verdun communicates it’s that the best has yet to come. Trust me.
