Hello my friends,
here we have the first review of 2014. I'm sad that it took
so long for me to write another review; but we're back better and stronger.
Today I have "A nest of ravens in the throat of time" the 2nd album of
"Obsidian Tongue" a 2009 formed 2 man band, from Massachusetts, United States.
Tracklist:
1. Brothers in the Stars
2. Black Hole in Human Form
3. My Hands Were Made to Hold the Wind
4. The Birth of Tragedy
5. Individuation
6. A Nest of Ravens in the Throat of Time
For quite sometime now; we all are witnessing a new "trend" the so
called "post black metal" has got some major attention in the "scene".
Most of it being very negative. It for sure has spread very fast and got
a great fellowship of fans but also a lot of Agalloch "wannabes".
But nevertheless, I don't care about the reputation of a genre,
That being said, here we have some excellent "post black/doom metal".

This album is opened by the nine minute long "Brothers in the stars" that is not making any kind of secret of Obsidian Tongue's influences. Right away You hear Agalloch in there. The track starts of with a very doomy riff that is slowly preparing for the journey that's about to begin then in just a split of a second You find Yourself in another world far away from reality,
in a world where the burden of life fades away into space. At least, that's how I felt listening to it at 1 a.m. What I liked most on the opener are the clean vocals; they definitely menage to haunt You into the music.
"Black hole in human form" in the other hand is much more aggressive and heavier in the overall tone. While listening to this and the rest of the album I just couldn't help myself but bands like Enslaved, Falls of Rauros, Wolves in the throne room came to mind. All of them being very high-quality artists You can gues what compliment I'm making to this 2009 formed 2 man band. Honestly, these guys don't offer something unknown but the quality, atmosphere and emotion of their songs should be enough to keep Your eyes and ears at them. I personaly wish they'd add more slower passages such as on the last song "A nest of ravens in the throat of time" btw. the vocals on that one are done by John Haughm (Agalloch).
What's left to say? This is a great release that You really don't want to miss.
